The Dangers Of Sleep Apnea
Date: Sunday, March 14 @ 21:14:24 MST Topic: Health
If you have a snoring problem, it may be worse than annoying. It could kill you. There are many reasons for snoring, but one of the most common is tissue blocking your throat.
There are different types of blockage. It may be that your throat muscles get to relaxed, and doesn’t keep the airway open. If you have tonsils, that’s even more likely. People who are overweight may develop the problem as the tissue of the windpipe gets thickened and narrowed. If your tongue is larger in comparison to your windpipe, snoring…and sleep apnea…is possible.
Another problem can come with age. As we get older, the brain may no longer send signals to the brain that the throat muscles need to be kept stiff.
What causes the danger is the lack of oxygen. With the throat blocked, air has a hard time getting into the lungs. When the oxygen in your blood drops below a certain level, your brain has to wake you up to increase it.
This goes on throughout the night, and you wake up unrested. This is because the constant awakenings prevent you from getting adequate REM sleep, which can cause all kinds of health problems.
One of those problems goes back to a cause for sleep apnea; obesity. This cycle can repeat itself with dramatic and dangerous consequences. Heart disease, diabetes and cancer can also result from lack of sleep.
Many times, at this point in an article, I recommend herbal preparations. This isn’t one of them, because the problem has to be addressed by your doctor, probably with consultation to an ear, nose and throat specialist.
There are several things that can be done. The easiest and least invasive is a special splint that keeps your airway open. Special oxygen masks may also be needed. Some people have good results from a sort of cryosurgery that removes excess tissue at the back of the throat, allowing a bigger opening.
Whatever you use, please do see a doctor if you have a snoring problem. It’s not a minor nuisance but a major health problem.
