Gall Bladder Problems and Herbal Remedies
Date: Sunday, March 14 @ 20:52:26 MST Topic: Health
The gall bladder produces bile, which aids in digestion. Unfortunately, stones can develop in this organ and cause all kinds of problems. Sometimes the stones can be broken up and pass naturally, but many times that doesn’t happen.
A stone stuck in a bile duct can cause pain, swelling and infection. This can lead to the necessity of removing the gall bladder completely. While your body can survive without it, it is a life changing event. Many of the things you used to eat and drink will cause severe pain if ingested. Knowing what they are is very important.
It would also be good to do everything in your power to avoid the problem in the first place. Not all gallstones can be prevented, but there are a few things that make them more likely. For instance, if you’re overweight, you’re at increased risk.
Your diet will also play a role in your risk. High fat, low fiber diets are conducive to stone formation, and the other end of the scale can be as bad. Fasting can cause bile to harden into stones as well. Family history, diabetes and cholesterol lowering medications can increase the likelihood.
Some may claim that a specific diet will prevent stone formation, but that’s not exactly accurate. There are things that may decrease your chances, however. A low fat, high fiber diet is a good start, as are low fat dairy products and unsalted nuts. Avoid cooking fats, caffeine and alcohol as much as possible.
This doesn’t mean to cut all fats from your diet. Recent studies indicate that if fat consumption is too low, it’s more likely to cause you problems. The reason is not yet known. Just choose healthy fats over the less healthy counterparts.
Once you’ve had your gallbladder taken out, you will still have to follow the above guidelines. In a way, that’s good news. Previously, people who’ve had their gallbladder removed were told to avoid all fats, period.
That is a drastic change, and not necessary. Your liver also produces bile and can digest some fats with no problem. Carefully watch the amounts, however so as not to end up in pain.
There are many herbs that may be useful in caring for your gallbladder. Dandelion, which is a diuretic and bile stimulant may help you digest fats more easily. Turmeric and milk thistle are also bile stimulants. Dandelion, Oregon grape root and yellow dock may help prevent stone formation in some people. Peppermint oil may help dissolve stones for easier passage.
Be aware that if a stone is stuck in a bile duct, herbs may not be your best answer. If there is a fever, swelling and severe nausea/vomiting, it’s time to see the doctor. If the office is closed, urgent care or the emergency room are a good idea.
