Dune: Remake in Pre-Production

Pre-production paperwork and legal mumbo jumbo are going on right now in Hollywood concerning a proposed remake of the 1984 cult classic Dune. Adapted from Frank Herbert’s science fiction novels, which stretches to six novels, the folks at Paramount are considering doing one better from the previous film adaptation.

Also titled Dune, the eighties film only caused a mere whimper from critical voices at the time, but was surprisingly a cult classic (among science fiction buffs that is). The epic takes place in a remote planet called Arrakis. It’s barren, desolate, and inhospitable to humanoid-kind. But what makes the place the center stage of a power struggle is because of a rare spice called Melange. From that single spice, wars, and treachery befalls the planet. It sure does echo the time of Europe’s colonial period, when rich countries killed each other in order to make their food taste better.

Aside from the 2000 television series remake, which also bombed in my opinion, the current one in production looks to be a winner, but I don’t want to jinx anything so I’ll stop at that. There is no word yet on whether the story will be faithful to the original or will there be some contemporary twists (Iraq war anyone?—but seriously, I hope they don’t do something cheesy like that), since the novels were written around 1965. Writer Josh Zetumer, who is also doing Villian, will be the one to tackle the undertaking of taking this twenty year old flop and hopefully bring it glory. The movie’s cast is still also big mystery, the only names attached to it right now are, Director Peter Berg, Kevin Misher, and of course Paramount Pictures. The release date is to be announced.
