For those ready to venture outside the realm of Hold’em and Omaha (let’s face it, these games are getting boring for those grinders who feel the need to hunt for different action at the rake races and into the realm of the games that used to be counted under the catch-all of poker here’s the second installment of a three-part beginner’s guide to Deuce to Seven Triple Draw with the basic strategy for the game.
In part 1 of a Beginner’s Guide to Deuce to Seven Triple Draw we looked at the betting structure and rules of Deuce to Seven Lowball. In part 2, we will examine hand selection and basic playing strategy.
There are two things to look for when you are choosing whether or not to play your starting five in Deuce to Seven: the value of what you have and the value of what you’re opponents cannot have.
First, the value of what you have:
If you start with a made Lo of 9 high or lower, stand pat (which means discard no cards during a draw round) and keep betting out from the very first betting round until the last. If someone catches up and beats you then that’s just bad luck.
If you start with 4 unpaired cards all 9 or lower, you should feel pretty strong about betting out and 100% should be sticking around for the first draw. Chances are that you will pick up a good draw in one of the next 3 and have a solid hand for a potential showdown. Generally speaking you do not want to be drawing in the third draw round but it’s fine to be drawing a single card in the second draw at the very least.
If you start with 3 unpaired cards all 9 or lower then you should be looking at your position (You should always be factoring in your table position in any game of poker but your position becomes especially crucial in triple draw in these types of decisions as we will see.) If you are in late position, sure, why not call and take a look at your draw. If you are in early position then it’s probably best to fold.
Any made lo hand starting with an 8 or 9 high is worth showing down with and if you ever make a 7 high lo then you should be raising the farm. 10 highs are getting towards mediocrity and anything over that is a call made against the bettor rather than for the strength of your own hand.
If you start with 2 unpaired cards of 9 or lower, or if you’ve got a bunch of paint or some paired up cards, then fold or bluff. I say fold or bluff because you’ve got no business flat calling there as you do not have the best hand. So either fold or get tricky.
As it just so happens, Deuce to Seven Triple Draw can be one of the easier limit games to bluff in – we’ll take a look at bluffing and more examined strategies in part 3 of A Beginner’s Guide to Deuce to Seven Triple Draw.
