Making Sure Your Family Is Prepared For Natural Disasters

No matter what region of the nation you call home, each part of the United States faces serious natural disasters. The East Coast and the South have to fret about the menace of hurricanes and other strong storms.

Residents of the Midwest have to be ready for tornadoes, while those in the Southwest get ready for monsoons and droughts in the desert. If you live on the West Coast, you could deal with mudslides and earthquakes. There is no region of the country that is exempt from these ominous threats. Natural disasters are going to happen. The good news is that you and your family can get ready for these events, so that when they do occur, you will be prepared.

Although you need to be equipped for any unlucky occurrence, some natural disasters are more likely to take place only in particular regions. You typically do not need to have a life vest on hand for a hurricane if you live in Utah, and most Arizona properties have no basements or storm shelters for a reason. Research the history of your state or region to judge which types of natural disasters are most probable to occur in your area. You can also visit the American Red Cross website to prepare for specific disasters that your state may be more prone to experience.

Regardless of where you live, you need to have a good supply of drinking water, since water is the foremost requirement that persons simply cannot live without. The general guideline is to have six gallons of water per family member. That will be an adequate supple of water to get through one week. When you put water away for storage purposes, use containers made of either plastic or glass. Use containers that either have never been used or only used previously for food or drinks.

Keep the filled containers somewhere that is cool and dry. Food is the second thing that you need to have if there is an unusual or emergency situation. Pick non-perishable items like food in boxes or cans. Don't forget to keep a manual can opener on hand as well. Any items that will require cooking need to be able to be cooked on a grill. It is best to keep food stored up on a shelf where it will be safe from insects and water damage. Another item that you need to have on hand is any food for a baby or pet, if applicable.

One good strategy is to organize an emergency kit and keep everything together in a large duffle bag somewhere in your home. Keep a first-aid kit in your emergency collection. This first-aid kit needs to be stocked with an assortment of adhesive bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, latex gloves, burn ointment, eye wash, pain relievers, tweezers, and any prescriptions that you may need. Also place in your emergency kit a flashlight with working batteries, scissors, a radio with batteries, and a spare set of clothes for everyone in the household. Gather all of these things together and put them in a container in your house and notify everyone where the emergency kit is located.

Talk to everyone in your family about what should happen in case of a natural disaster. Just like your child's school will practice a tornado, fire, or earthquake drill depending on where you live, your family should have a plan ahead of time as well. Children do better in an emergency situation if they have a routine or have been informed what to do in case of an emergency. Make sure everyone is informed of what to do in the case of a natural disaster, and what items they should bring. In events like these, it is always better to prepare as much as possible before they even happen.
