Breastfeeding Tips

Sucking is the strongest instinct a newborn baby has, so there is usually no problem with getting them to suck. However, a new mother may feel awkward and not know how to hold the baby or start the process. One good way is to hold the baby's tummy to your own and have the chin to your breast. Cup your breast with thumb over the nipple and fingers underneath. Tickle baby's lips with the nipple and you'll soon find that little mouth opens and closes where it should.
Watch to see that the upper and lower lips are rolled out. If they are not, then break the suction by inserting your little finger carefully between the baby's mouth and your breast. The tip of the baby's nose can touch the breast, but watch to see there is still breathing space, or baby will choke and not be able to settle happily.
Make sure that most of the dark area around the nipple is actually in the baby's mouth. This will help to prevent cracking. After the feeding is finished, allow a little breast milk to dry on the nipples, and then cover with a bra or nursing pad. Tenderness is normal for the first few days, but should not persist. If the breasts or nipples are very sore, then you should see a doctor or go to a baby clinic.
