New York Mets Oliver Pérez has not been able to keep a very steady performance with his team basically moving from the worst to the best.
Nevertheless, his performance always has been a certain one when facing the Yankees; also, he has been backed up by the Puerto Rican Carlos Delgado and together has managed to win over their rival by 3-1.
"If we can achieve for Ollie to be constant, what has been a problem during his entire career, we will have an excellent launcher", said the Mets coach, Jerry Manuel.
Billy Wagner closed the game to give to the Mets its fourth triumph in the six games against the Yankees during the season. It's barely the second time since 1997, when the interleague games began that the Mets managed the season's series.
Now that the Mets leave the American League teams games for a following eight game tour, which will begin in Saint Louis, the Yankees on the contrary return to their home stadium for a nine game series.
"Obviously, we have some very important series coming up. The next time that we see Ollie, we will be in Philadelphia. This should be somewhat exciting to view, another rivalry", said Manuel.
During this particular game Oliver had the control he improved to a record of 5-1 with an effectiveness of 2, 61 in six innings against the Yankees including a triumph obtained last month at the Yankee Stadium.
After the Puerto Rican Pedro Feliciano played the eighth inning without allowing hits, Wagner rose to the mound for the ninth inning and Derek Jeter opened connecting a simple, but Wagner withdrew to Alex Rodriguez with a high one to the Puerto Rican Jorge Posada and to Betemit with a punch.
Darrell Rasner escaped from various problems at the beginning of the game, suffering few damages, but did fall six times in seven openings.
On the other hand, the Dominican Ronnie Belliard connected a home run of two runs in the 12th inning providing the Washington Nationals the victory for 3-2 over the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles obtained the lead for 2-1 in the high part of the inning with the single from Adam Jones and George Sherrill (2-3) who scored for the first two in the lower part.
But Dmitri Young, the last Washington available batter obtained a base. Later Belliard connected a launch of 1-2, his sixth home run of the year arriving to the left garden. With this home run, Belliard managed to surpass his batting record of 13-0.
Joel Hanrahan (5-2), the Nationals sixth pitcher, relieved with runners in the first and second inning and allowed a simple run for Jones. Later the Venezuelan Guillermo Quiroz closed the inning.
In another game, John Lackey did not managed to even the game. He temporary stopped the Dodgers to three hits during eight innings and two thirds, while the Venezuelan Francisco Rodriguez withdrew last out. While on Sunday the Los Angeles Angels were surpassed 1-0 by their city rivals.
